Learn Spanish to Learn the Culture and Get Around
What is the best way to learn Spanish? Well, the best way is to be born and raised in a Spanish-speaking household, but this isn't an option for everyone! Another way that you could learn is total cultural immersion, but most people don't have the time or money to spend a few years in Barcelona so they can take time to understand Spanish and learn the culture. Most people want to find an easier way to do this, and fortunately, there is one.
Speaking another language doesn't come naturally to everyone. Sure, some people are able to pick up languages easily, but most, especially adults, have trouble with all of the things they need to learn and retain if they want to speak fluently. One of the best things you can do is to take a course in Spanish to learn the language, at least as much as you need to get by.
You don't have to go to a special school for the language, although that is a possibility. Something that many Spanish-speaking people will tell you is that the language you learn at one of those schools is not going to be the same language actually spoken in the country you visit. The language in the schools is rigid and formal, not at all how people really speak. Certainly, people might understand you, but your language will feel stilted, and you won't be able to understand everything that people say because it will be too rapid fire.
A much better option is to take a course that you can get online. Audio courses are great because a part of learning Spanish is to learn the proper pronunciations and inflections that you will need to use. This is something that you will have far more trouble with if you simply try to read a book on the subject. Even a book that has a great pronunciation guide isn't going to be able to give you the same benefit as hearing people speak it, as you would get with an audio course.
When you start learning the language, you need to practice it so that you can be fluent. If you don't have anyone who already speaks fluent that you can practice with, you can always learn the language with a friend. Find someone with an interest in Spanish to learn the language along with you. Not only will you have someone that can help you with the pronunciations, but it can be far more enjoyable when you learn with a partner.
Many different programs are on the market, and each person might respond differently to different styles of learning. I found that, of all the products I've tried, Rocket Spanish worked the best for me. Keep in mind that when you are learning Spanish, learn the culture of the country that you will be visiting as well. This will go a long way in helping you have a great trip.
