Finding the Right Online Spanish Course

I remember the first time I was going to Spain, how excited I was to see Barcelona, to visit the museums and galleries and explore the countryside. The problem was, I didn't know a lick of Spanish. I had trouble ordering from Taco Bell! Still, I wasn't about to let my lack of knowledge deter me from having a great time. I endeavored to learn as much as I could in the few months I had before the trip.

I knew that I wouldn't have time to enroll in a traditional class. I also knew that learning that way would be slow going, and I would never learn enough before the trip. From some Spanish speaking friends, I also learned that the classes didn't always teach conversational Spanish, which was what I needed to know. I didn't feel it right to bother my friends that spoke Spanish and have them teach me. Instead, I started looking for an online Spanish course.

Searching for the right online Spanish course was more difficult than I had anticipated. It wasn't because of a lack of programs available - it was quite the opposite. I found that there were just so many out there, all promising me that I would speak Spanish like a native in a month or two. That was just what I needed, but I wasn't sure how to pick the right online Spanish course.

It took me a little while, but I finally found the right one. I thought I would save you some grief and let you know the things that you need to look for when you are trying to choose an online course. This should save you some valuable time.

The first thing you want to make sure is that the online Spanish course teaches you conversational Spanish, not the rigid Spanish that you tried to learn in high school. Conversational Spanish, the language that the people speak to one another every day, is what you need. Next, make sure that the lessons are for the beginner who has no experience in the language. As I said, even the Taco Bell menu gave me trouble.

You will also want to make sure that the program has an audio portion so that you will be able to hear the proper pronunciation of the words. In addition to audio, find a course that has some interactive materials, as these will help in learning and retaining the material. The more fun a course is the more likely you are to complete it successfully. That's just human nature. If something is boring, people won't put as much into it.

Another great thing that you will want to have in your online Spanish course is information about the grammar and the culture. This helps ensure that you say things correctly - and at the appropriate time!

I ended up choosing Rocket Spanish to help me learn, and I've never regretted that choice. I learned quickly and I learned the real language.
