Do Spanish Schools in Spain Teach Real Spanish?
If you are going to spend some time in Spain, but you don't have a good grasp of the language, then you might be considering going to one of the Spanish schools in Spain to learn how to speak or to brush up on the language. How well do these schools work? Are you going to be getting real information and learn how to speak properly, or are they just taking you for a ride? A lot of that is going to depend on the school that you choose. With so many out there, you do run the risk of choosing the wrong one.
You would think that going to Spanish schools in Spain would be a good idea, right? You would think that they would be the perfect ones to give you a masterful command of the language and make you so fluent that you would never be able to tell that you weren't born in the country. That isn't the case in most circumstances, and I'll tell you why. Most of these schools are teaching the rigid, proper way to speak Spanish. You might learn many of the words, and you might know the grammar when you go to these schools, but you won't know how the real people speak on the street and when they are shopping or dining.
Imagine this: someone from another country decides to come to the United States and learn English, but the school in which he or she enrolls teaches Shakespearean English. Sure, this person will know many of the words in the English language, but they are going to come out of the school with a mouthful of 'thou' and 'thee', not to mention a host of other antiquated phrases. People will laugh and snicker when the poor person asks for directions or a glass of water. That's not much different from learning the formal Spanish language. People might understand it, but they don't speak it. Spanish schools in Spain are useful for some things, but for learning the language of the people, they are not.
So, if these Spanish schools in Spain aren't the right answer for everyone, what is? How does one learn the language then if they can't live in Spain beforehand? The answer is sitting right in front of you. The internet of course! You will be able to find a number of courses that will teach conversational Spanish, real Spanish they don't teach in the Spanish schools in Spain. You will need to know this when you go to a Spanish speaking country. Find a course that offers you the things you need, things that you won't find in more of the Spanish schools in Spain, and then give it a shot.
Learning Spanish can be fun, and it doesn't have to take years of study. You can get reasonably fluent within a month or so, and the more you practice the faster you will understand and speak. Rocket Spanish is the course that worked for me.
